Switching Pet Insurance, Explained
Switching insurer can save money — but it can also change what's covered. Here's what to understand first.
In plain English
When you switch insurers, you're starting a brand new policy. The new insurer decides what they will and won't cover from day one.
Most policies have waiting periods at the start — short windows where new illness claims aren't accepted. Accident cover often starts much sooner.
Anything your pet has already had treatment for, or shown signs of, is usually treated as pre-existing and excluded by the new insurer.
A real-world example
Bella the Cocker Spaniel. Bella has been on a lifetime policy for 3 years. Her owner finds a cheaper quote elsewhere and considers switching. Bella has been treated for an ear condition before.
- If Bella switches, the new insurer would usually treat the ear condition as pre-existing and exclude it from any future claims.
- Any new illness in the early days of the new policy could fall inside a waiting period and may not be covered.
- Bella's old insurer can no longer pay for the ear condition once that policy ends, even though it was previously covered.
Things to understand before choosing
Waiting periods
Examples include 14 days for illness and shorter or no waiting periods for accidents. The exact rules are in the policy wording.
Pre-existing conditions
Conditions your pet has already had — or shown signs of — are usually excluded by a new insurer.
Renewal timing
Letting the old policy expire before the new one starts can leave a gap in cover. Some owners line up the start and end dates carefully.
What you may keep
Staying with the same insurer at renewal typically keeps ongoing conditions covered under a lifetime policy. Switching usually means losing that.
