Why policy wording matters

Pet insurance documents can be difficult to understand.

Waiting periodsExclusionsExcessesCo-paymentsTreatment limits

Policy wording often explains these things using insurance terminology that many pet owners have never seen before.

Willow helps translate policy wording into plain English.

Co-payments

Percentage of costs you may need to pay on top of the fixed excess.

Treatment Limits

Annual or lifetime caps on how much can be claimed for specific conditions.

Dental Cover

What dental treatments are included, excluded or limited in your policy.

Behavioural Treatment

Whether behavioural therapy and referrals are covered and under what conditions.

Renewals

How your cover may change at renewal and what terms may be updated.

Exclusions

Specific conditions, treatments or circumstances your policy does not cover.

Hidden Limits

Sub-limits buried in policy wording that could reduce expected payouts.

Example

See how Willow turns complicated policy wording into something useful.

Policy wording
β€œThe policyholder shall be subject to a per-condition deductible of Β£125 in addition to a variable co-payment of 20% of the remaining eligible veterinary fees, where applicable. Benefit limits are subject to annual reinstatement only where lifetime cover has been selected and confirmed at inception.”

Example text only. Not taken from a real policy.

Plain English explanation

You pay the first Β£125 for each new condition. After that, you also pay 20% of whatever the vet charges. Your insurer pays the rest. If you have lifetime cover, your annual limit resets every year. If not, once the pot runs out, that condition is no longer covered.

Things to watch out for
  • You pay the excess and co-payment on every claim for the same condition.
  • Not all policies reset the limit annually β€” check whether yours is lifetime cover.
  • Some conditions may be excluded if they appear before the waiting period ends.
