Cheap Pet Insurance, Explained
A cheaper policy isn't always a worse one — but the lowest price often comes with trade-offs worth understanding.
In plain English
Pet insurance prices vary because policies are not all the same. Two policies at very different prices can offer very different cover.
Cheaper policies often have lower vet fee limits, shorter cover for ongoing conditions, higher excess or more exclusions. None of this is automatically bad — it's just a different trade-off.
To compare fairly, it helps to look at the wording, limits and excess together, not just the monthly price.
A real-world example
Teddy the Cockapoo. Teddy's owner sees two quotes: £15/month and £35/month. Both call themselves 'pet insurance'.
- The £15/month quote has a £1,000 annual vet fee limit, a £150 excess and a 12-month time-limited structure.
- The £35/month quote has a £6,000 annual vet fee limit on lifetime cover, with a £99 excess and no percentage co-payment until age 8.
- Both are valid pet insurance policies. They behave very differently if Teddy develops an ongoing condition or needs expensive treatment.
Things to understand before choosing
Why prices differ
Examples include cover type (lifetime, time-limited, accident-only), vet fee limit, excess, co-payment, breed, age and postcode.
Compare wording, not just price
Two policies at the same price can include very different things. You may want to read the key facts document for each.
Limits and excess together
A low premium with a high excess and low limit can mean more out of pocket when you claim. Some owners compare a few options side by side.
Long-term cost
Cheaper policies can become more expensive over time if a condition is excluded later. The right balance depends on the pet and the owner's budget.
Educational only. ClearPetCover does not recommend specific insurers or policies — always read the policy wording before choosing cover.
